Arizona Wilderness Coalition
Organization Description: The Arizona Wilderness Coalition (AWC) was created in the 1970's in response to the Forest Service RARE-II process under the Wilderness Act of 1964 and the Bureau of Land Management Wilderness Review, directed by the Federal Land Policy and Management Act of 1976. By design, those processes were more about "releasing" lands from wilderness consideration than they were about designating wilderness. However, through the efforts of a band of dedicated volunteers guided by Joni Bosh and Rob Smith of the Sierra Club, the AWC was instrumental in getting 3.5 million acres of new wilderness designated in Arizona through 1984 and 1990 legislation. More important, the AWC managed to stave off hard release language, which today allows for the reconsideration of over five million acres of public lands for permanent wilderness protection.

Phoenix Children’s Hospital
Organization Description: Phoenix Children's Hospital has provided hope, healing, and the best healthcare for children and families since it was born in 1983. Today, Phoenix Children's is one of the ten largest children's hospitals in the country and provides specialty and sub-specialty inpatient, outpatient, trauma, and emergency care to patients throughout Arizona and other Southwestern states.
Volunteer Opportunity: Our in-house volunteers are asked to sign an agreement pledging to volunteer a minimum of 100 hours, about 3-4 hours per week. Our volunteers take their jobs as seriously and work as hard as our paid staff.

For the safety and wellbeing of our patients, we conduct a health and background screening. We also provide specialized training for each volunteer. This process is very costly. Please be realistic and honest when deciding to make this commitment.

Not interested in a long-term commitment? Become a community volunteer.
We have other, equally important opportunities to support the hospital that do not require such an extensive time commitment, such as helping in the community.
  • Special Events
  • Group volunteer opportunities
  • Service learning opportunities
  • Complete volunteer projects at home
If you are interested in community opportunities send your full name and email address to dwhitney@phoenixchildrens.com.

Community volunteers do not go through a health and background screening and are not required to attend an information session.

Project Linus Tucson
Organization Description: Project Linus began in Denver on Christmas Eve 1995 when an article appeared in Parade Magazine entitled, "Joy to the World".
